The dog days of summer are coming, and we’ve had some pretty cool experiences on the water this week. The weather man had called for thunderstorms and heat advisories, but our time on the water has been relatively pleasant. While there were a couple of showers we tried to avoid, the slight breeze kept us pretty comfortable on these hot days.

The fishing can be somewhat unpredictable this time of year. The water temps are in the high 80’s, and the early bite has been the best bet for light tackle fishing. Topwater fishing can be really good right now for the angler who is willing to venture out before dawn.

We’ve actually had some good days on light tackle, catching multiple inshore slams. Sizes of fish have been really random with gator trout and over-slot reds mixed in with smaller fish. There is always the slow trip mixed in this time of year, but I have been finding most of my success from looking through my past fishing logs and trying new spots.

This is the time of year for catching tarpon in South Carolina. We are seeing more beginning to show up, and the mullet are here in great numbers. I was able to catch bait before leaving the dock, yesterday.

We jumped a tarpon, yesterday! That puts me at 1 for 3 in the early part of the 2022 tarpon season. The fish was on for about a minute before spitting the hook while jumping away from us. On the same trip, we ended up with two Bull Reds as a consolation prize!
