With historic roots as a fishing town, Murrells Inlet offers area residents and visitors exceptional inshore fishing opportunities. This area is compromised of an enclosed saltwater marsh system loaded with inshore favorites such as redfish, seatrout, and flounder.

A Closer Look At Inshore Species

Murrells Inlet has developed a reputation for both flounder and redfish. Catching “doormat” flounder and bull redfish in the area is not uncommon.

Flounder

Murrells Inlet is home to our different species of Flounder, and it is time for SC Flounder Season 2023 to kick off! These are southern flounder, summer flounder, gulf flounder, and winter flounder. As the name suggests, winter flounder is a cooler weather species, while during the warmer months the other three species are most commonly caught. The average flounder is in the 14-inch range, while flounder reaching 20 inches or more can be found as well. It is these larger flounder that get the nickname “doormat”.

Redfish

Redfish are available in Murrells Inlet all year long, however, in the Spring and Fall, those large redfish (in the 20-40lb range) begin to flood the area. In this, it has been stated that this fishery has “the best red fishing on the East Coast”.

Other Favorites

With direct ocean access, Murrells Inlet is home to a variety of inshore species. Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, Cobia, and even Sharks are area regulars. This brings us to the neighboring nearshore waters. While we are trying to focus on inshore fishing in this article it is hard to dismiss the reefs and wrecks located within 5 miles of shore. Out here, anglers can expect to target Spanish Mackerel, Black Sea Bass, Spadefish, and further shots at Redfish and Flounder.
