Fall brings with it football, hunting and cooler temperatures. In South Carolina, we look forward to October as the peak month for fishing. Visitors who waited out the summer crowds to come to the coast will be rewarded with some of the best fishing the area has to offer.

You could try just about anything…tarpon, bull reds, trout, flounder…the list goes on. This is the time of year where you can target trophy fish and light tackle in the same day. You can also use varying tactics such as live bait, artificial and topwater. I prefer soft plastics and topwater for redfish, while trout will hit all of the above including hard baits.

Tarpon will stick around through the big mullet run before migrating back south. This is an excellent time to target these powerful fish as they can be found feeding aggressively. An added bonus to targeting October tarpon in South Carolina is that these fish quickly become an afterthought to the average angler.

Bull reds will enter estuaries from Murrells Inlet to Georgetown for their fall spawn. These fish become primary targets for many anglers in the area. This can be stressful on these fish as they are here trying to reproduce for the health of our fishery. I try to target them in different ways and minimize the time it takes to get them released.

It seems like everything clicks on all cylinders as we ease in to Fall. This year should be especially good considering limited rainfall and a non-eventful hurricane season. Clean water with high salinity levels and plenty of bait should point to a lot of happy fish in Winyah Bay.

Located just south of Pawleys Island, Winyah Bay is where the Grand Strand ends and the Lowcountry begins. It hosts some of the best fishing South Carolina has to offer which brings fishing guides from other areas to try their luck; but Winyah Bay is one spot where you are going to make sure your guide is a true local. Having grown up here, the local guides are a tight knit group that work together to be at the top of our game.
