The Fall fishing season is in full swing for the Grand Strand from Myrtle Beach to Pawleys Island. This is the best time of year for fishing in South Carolina, and we are having double digit days on most of our trips. Visitors who choose this time of year for their vacation along the South Carolina coast are being rewarded with outstand action.

Some of our favorite action is topwater fishing for trout and redfish. One of the most thrilling bites an angler can experience is a trout or redfish blowing up the surface on a topwater bait. We are using lighter baits for the trout, and while they will hit the same, we try to use heavier baits with stouter hooks for the reds. Sometimes the redfish fight so hard they are able to straighten the hooks on the smaller topwater lures. If you are looking to experience this exciting fishing method, we will be using this strategy through late November depending on water temperatures.

Trout are also biting well on live shrimp…the clear winner for a trout’s preferred diet. Artificial baits are coming in at a close second once these fish start getting fired up. We have had half day trips with over 30 fish being caught!

Every October, Winyah Bay hosts the running of the bulls. Unlike the activity in the summer festivals of Spain, we are talking bull reds…big ones. Fishing for bull reds along the South Carolina coast is both relaxing and exhilarating. Anglers are able to take in the views as their baits rest along the bottom for one of these fierce fighters to pick it up. When a bull reds hits, they leave no doubt as the drag screams on the reel. We use heavy enough gear for our anglers to manage the fight quickly in order to reduce stress on these fish as they come in to the estuary to spawn.

The fishing will remain strong throughout the fall and winter. People often ask, “when is the best time for fishing here?”; and the answer is now! If you are coming to the Myrtle Beach area, contact me to book your trip today.
