The Upcoming Tarpon Season

Tarpon is a world-renowned game fish, with the most experienced anglers recognizing their exhilarating leaps and runs. However, many don’t realize that tarpon is one of the world’s most extraordinary migratory fish species. Winyah Bay is a popular destination for these armored creatures, as they seek food resources, shelter from strong currents, and suitable water temperatures.

Tarpons migrate up the East coast yearly. Every spring, fishermen anxiously await their arrival due to their size and fight power. Water temperature is the primary factor for these fish’s first appearance. Like humans, tarpons have a temperature range where they are most comfortable – 75° – 95° Fahrenheit is optimal for them. It is rare to even stumble across one if you find yourself in waters below 70°, as cold shock/mortality occurs within the 50° – 55° range. Fortunately, in late May, water temperatures reach the high 70s!

For the South Carolina tarpon angler, bait and water temperature play essential roles. When we move into the spring months, there will be an influx of small menhaden along our coast from Myrtle Beach to Georgetown. Then come the mullets out of their cold weather haunts, congregating in certain areas waiting to be plucked up by aggressive fish and savvy fishermen.

Gizzard shad make their presence known, too, schooling around bay points while they search for food. With these two elements aligned – bait in the water and our temperatures steadily on the rise – it sets off a chain of events that makes this one of the best times to catch the tarpon along our coastline!
